Roll With It

| 03-Nov=2012| Woke up at 9:00am, but when you go to bed at 3:30am, it’s hard to feel too bad about the time. The construction site across the street was being cleared of the rock they’ve been excavating all week … um, it’s SATURDAY! Jeff and I headed out to the flea market, over to Burgerjoint for round 2 of burgers, then to the Grand Marina bar to chill with a beer. It’s nice to have an open schedule today – the only off-venue we want to hit is at 7pm.Gusty again today, but not as crazy as yesterday and the locals seem as relieved as the tourists. Everything is covered with a salty grime from the fierce winds and shop owners were out today tidying up their store fronts.

Pleepleus with a burger. Pleepleus with a pint. Nothing new to see here … move along.

Met up with Tristen to go to Dillon for Brennivín shots (them, not me!) but it was still closed. We stopped into the Reykjavik Backpackers instead and caught a little of a live DJ set.

Epic Rain at Deutsche Bar. Ingvar told us about these guys and played some samples for us. A nice surprise.

Due to a cancellation by Django Django (highly disappointing), Jeff and I had an opportunity in our sked to pop over to Gamli to see the insanity that is Dr. Spock. The dude on the left is a famous Icelandic rocker, also in the band HAM. Check out the fresh ensemble.

The “replacement” band for Django Django: Rangleklods. Great techno that proved to be a nice segue to GusGus.

Tonight’s finale, GusGus at Harpa. Top notch. We’ve seen three shows and one off-venue by this band and they do not disappoint. Tight sets with interesting twists on the favorite songs. The only let-down, if you could call it that, is that the female vocalist from the Arabian Horse album wasn’t with them tonight.
2:45am. Waffles from the street vendor? Yes, please! Freezing cold outside but not much wind, luckily, or we’d be wearing that whipping cream!  Have we mentioned how incredible the whipped cream is? The waffle cart was only out on Saturday this year so we were doubly-excited to see her after Friday’s anticipation only to find no waffle cart at 2:30am.

Random notes:

  • If you’re following the Star Wars backpacks, tonight it was Yoda
  • Heard “Thrift Shop” again, this time streaming at Deutsche Bar
  • Skinny jean still rule, but Converse have been replaced by boots
  • Nordic people are hella tall. Bad when they’re standing directly in front of you for hours.
