Festival Day 1 – finally!

DSCF0440|05-Nov-2014| Started the morning with cappuccino and pastry at Sandholt. They’ve expanded to the space next door to the original shop and now have table service. What?!

Popped over to Lucky Records to drop off Jeff and say hello to the guys there then headed out for some shopping – mostly window shopping.  A fair number of new shops on Laugavegur, the main street.

Hit up the Bonus grocery for some staples then met up with the gang in time for lunch from Noodle Station.  I’ll spare you the pic – you’ve seen this movie before. 🙂

First up for the musical agenda – Kiasmos at KEX.  After the set we split up – Jeff and I went to Bio Paradis to see Good Moon Deer; Berto, Tristen and Andy went to The Laundromat to see Berndson, Yes, it’s really a laundromat … with a bar.

Regrouped for dinner at a new restaurant, KOL, across the street from the apartment.  We swore at the construction noise on two separate trips in 2013, but the result was worth it.  Excellent food and a very innovative cocktail menu.

Jeff and I posted up at Húrra – there were four of seven bands we wanted to see there so it seemed liked a good bet.

Counts for the day:  9 bands, 4 fire alarms, one blown circuit and one HUGE mosh.

If I’d taken pictures of every single glove I’ve seen while travelling, we’d have a coffee table book by now. No point in starting now considering all the great ones already missed. I couldn’t resist snapping a pic of this gem in a doorway.

Kiasmos at KEX – an electronic project featuring Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen (Bloodgroup and Fura). A blend of acoustic sounds recorded and played back with synth pop beats. Sounds weird, I know, but it’s awesome when it really starts grooving.

KEXP 90.3 in Seattle, kexp.org, is broadcasting live this week starting at 6am PST, including streaming video.

Good Moon Deer at Bio Paradis. We’ve seen a number of bands here including FM Belfast and Reykjavik. The bands set up in the lobby of the movie theater. Typically there’s a screening of some indie film going on in conjunction with Airwaves so the whole thing makes sense …. sort of.

First up for the on-venue agenda, Börn.

Chick punk.

Solid DJ set from Seattle’s own Vox Mod.  Total energy for 30 minutes. Impressive considering he just flew in today!

Ghostigital. We’ve raved about these guys before and they were amazing, as always.

Seriously, if Ghostigital can’t get you moving, you might be dead.

The first half of the set was a crazy-Einar-stream-of-consciousness that was both brilliant and ridiculous. Where does this stuff come from?

There were some bands in between, of course:

DJ Flugvél og geimskip was a trip; spacy storytelling with custom sound effects. Jeff summed it up: sincerely weird.  Cats taking over the world? Talking snakes?

Sindri Eldon and the Ways – another band by Bjork’s son. He should have stuck with Slugs, it was a much better project.

Muck – is it punk or metal? Either way, feedback is not an instrument.

Pink Street Boys – these guys are “all the rage” right now. They were OK, but again, louder is not synonymous with better.

Wrapped up the evening with hot dogs at Baejarins bertu pylsur.  The cold wind is back and blowing off the bay directly into the hot dog queue. Chilly, but fortunately the line was short.

Successful first day of Airwaves – stay-tuned for more adventures in the 101.

Good night!
