Camden Town and SOHO

| 04-Nov-2019 | This morning’s breakfast looks a lot like yesterday’s, though a different bakery in a different part of town.  This morning we braved the morning commute traffic – thought it took 4 trains through our station before one had enough room to even consider getting on – and headed north to Camden Town. Ah, the luxury of not being in a hurry to get anywhere. We walked through the sprawling Camden Market complex that now takes up much of the former industrial area along Regent’s Canal. Vendors of all kinds are selling their wares, and small street food stalls are mixed in throughout the five main market areas.

Regent’s Canal is an interesting landmark. The canal runs 8+ miles along north central London, and has a foot path along its full length. Originally opened in 1816 for commercial barge traffic, today the canal is used by private boaters and a water bus. There are 13 individual locks along the length of the canal. In the 1970’s, one chamber in each lock was converted into an overflow weir to facilitate unmanned use by boaters on the canal. We stood on one of the foot bridges and watched a longboat captain and his wife effectively raised their boat through one of the locks by Camden Market using the large, manual paddle system.

Banksy’s ‘Nuke Girl’ is being “preserved” on the side of what is now an office building in Camden Town, just off Regent’s Canal.

Much Amy Winehouse love in Camden.

All the lovelies in the dress fabric section of Liberty of London. Though their prints generally aren’t my style, the quality of their fabrics, and their presentation, are worth the visit.  I also picked up a box of signature stationary for a friend who still uses such a thing.

Late lunch at Byron, a local burger chain, in SOHO. Present on almost every list or review I read about the burger scene in London, the Beak St. location was perfectly situated in our afternoon shopping path.
Takeout Thai for dinner and an episode of Chef’s Table were the evening’s agenda. Tomorrow is our last full day in London, wrapping up with a-ha at Royal Alberta Hall … the actual reason for this side-trip on our way to Airwaves.
