ATVs!! Woot Woot!
| 13-Oct-2011 | After a nice leisurely breakfast, we headed out to the mall ostensibly to do some music shopping. Which we did, with some success. However it was only then that Norberto and I discovered that we had unwittingly become accomplices to a shoe shopping trip. See picture below for photographic evidence. The rest of the morning was spent doing some shopping around town and eating some of the hot dogs for which Reykjavik is so famous. In the afternoon we were picked up and went out on our guided ATV tour over some very rough terrain. The weather remained windy and a little rainy, but really the huge pools of standing water on the trails were a much bigger cause of our drenching. On the way back town the guide was asking us if we were in town for Airwaves, who we’d seen, etc. When we told him we weren’t sure who we were going to see tonight, he said, “Well come see my band. We’re playing at NASA at nine.” Turns out he plays guitar for a singer we saw last year! We exchanged emails later today, and will try to meet up with him later this weekend to give him CDs with pics of the show he played at NASA last year (that we saw) as well as the one we went to tonight. Awesome pizza for dinner, then we hit the shows, catching six bands tonight. The quality continues to be impressive, and the venues packed. I particularly enjoyed Fist Fokkers, who put a new spin on some covers while draped in Christmas lights. The food has been great, and the fashions continue to amaze. The weather cleared this evening, so we have our fingers crossed for tomorrow! |
(H) Sweet new footwear! |
Our ATV guide took us up to the top of a “mountain” (read: foothill) with a great view of Reykjavik. Don’t mind the weather, the city is back there …. seriously. |
Berto coming down the hillside. (H) That’s the actual terrain … I did have the camera level! Glad I chose not to drive my own – riding is such a blast without all the work! |
Street dogs for lunch from Baejarins bertu pylsur. |
Pizza at Eldsmidjan never disappoints. It’s no Bridal Trails NY Pizza, but it is Thursday and that means …. Pizza Night! |
We saw Waiters and Bellboys …. no issue with seating. |
Iiris, an Estonian artist, and her band rocked Nasa tonight! Tiny little woman, powerful voice and amazing performer. Best part of Airwaves is “discovering” artists you’ve never heard of. |
Lára Rúnars and her band at Nasa. Great cover of “Tainted Love”. Guitarist here on the left, Birkir, was our ATV guide this afternoon! |
Bárujárn at Amsterdam. Compelling surf-rock, even if they do seem completely disinterested … as usual. |
Fist Fokkers at Amsterdam. Two-man rock group complete with leopard-spot coat and holiday lights. Some notable covers, randomly selected from suggestions via Facebook: “Don’t Speak” No Doubt; “Sabotage” Beastie Boys; “Nothing Compares To You” Sinéad O’Connor; and “Since You’ve Been Gone” Kelly Clarkson. Yes, it was as interesting as it sounds. |
