Denim Manpris are huge in Helsinki

| 23-May-2012|  This observation has absolutely nothing to do with today’s post, but it’s funny. Skinny jeans and Converse continue to be popular in Europe too. Discuss.

Today we took the bus to Porvoo, about 50 km east of Helsinki. It’s Finland’s second oldest city, founded in the 13th century. We arrived early and had much of the old town to ourselves as shopkeepers opened their doors and set up their colorful store-fronts. And more cobblestone streets.

A café near the town square in Porvoo. The town is a popular day-trip from Helsinki but we were ahead of the crowd.

Riverside cafes and residences in Porvoo.

A riverside park in Porvoo. Nice backyard, huh?

After returning from Porvoo, we went to get gelato to “use up” some Euro coins before departing for Stockholm tomorrow.

While enjoying our treats, we were entertained by police and fire personnel responding to a call at a nearby building. Four police cars, four fire engines (including two ladders) and yards of police tape for what appeared to be nothing. Handled with Scandinavian efficiency, though.

More cartoon-themed soda: Moomins; my favorite Finnish characterss created by Tove Jansson.

Dinner catered by the Stockmann deli – brie and pear salad, pasta salad and excellent bread.

Goofing around on last evening’s walk. Perhaps inspired by our recent Beastie Boys video marathon?
