Airwaves 2017 – Day 4
| 04-Nov-2017 | How’d it get to be Day 4 already?
Started our morning with what is now an Airwaves tradition: breakfast at Café Paris with our friend Leana. Following breakfast, Jeff and the guys went on to check out the Flea Market while I went in the opposite direction to check out the shopping on Laugavegur. |
Badass footwear obtained. Totally rockin’ the “business professional” dress code in these babies. |
A short set by Panos of Komodo at Hertex, a second hand store. Welcome to Airwaves – this was amazing in a quirky way. Even the guys performing were laughing about the ridiculousness of it all. We were surprised to discovered that this duo is 2/3rds of the band Godchilla. |
Mt. Esja showing off again – sunset reflecting on the snow. |
Annual dinner at Shalimar, the Pakistani restaurant downtown.
|
Hórmónar fought their way through their opening set. The lead singer’s voice was trashed after all the shows this festival, and she probably shouldn’t have been doing this one, but they soldiered on. Fortunately, metal allows you to crank up the guitars and bass without anyone taking exception. |
Fufanu, excellent as always. The graphics display was similar to their setup last year, and most of the material from the newish album “Sports”. They did throw us an older song at the end after playing the title track “Sports” twice due to technical difficulties midway through. Love this band and they’re so good in a bigger venue. |
OG rockers, HAM! We are HAM. You are HAM. Hard rockin’ 40 minute set from the metal band that’s here to make your head explode!
|
If funk and reggae had a love child, it would be this band from Mali (!): Songhoy Blues. We new nothing of this band going into their set but they won everyone over with the first song. Tight sound; heavy bass; smiling and obviously enjoying themselves. Infectious energy. Blown away! |
Closing out the night: Gus Gus. With a full hour and a half, there was no rushing this set. Graphics, lasers, smoke machine, dancing – it was going ON. And NO ONE makes you wait for the drop like Biggi. They had the packed venue dancing and singing. *whew* Amazing! Vintage Gus Gus. |
And this is what the floor of the Art Museum looks like after six bands and 7+ hours. 3:00AM – signing off from Airwaves Day 4 |
