Gracias Buenos Aires!

| 25-Apr-2017| Today’s plan is fluid – it’s supposed to start raining, it’s just a question of when.  Instead of hiking back to Plaza de Mayo to our starting point, we took the subway this morning. The hot, humid, greenhouse of a subway for 30 minutes included about 5 of them sitting still between stations. Want to know how to tell the tourists? They’re not bundled up like it’s winter (it’s 65F) and they’re dying in the sauna that is the subway car.

Depending the weather, we may venture into La Boca, one of the oldest, and most notorious barrios, in Buenos Aries. La Caminito is famous for its brightly colored building, cafes and tango. It’s also known for its crime, and its passionate and violent soccer rivalry.

Popped back above ground at Plaza de Mayo and made our way to the river to check out Puente De La Mujer – a 335 foot pedestrian suspension bridge spanning Rio Darsena Sur. Unfortunately the clouds were low and the rain was starting , so the view wasn’t as nice as we’d hoped.

It was pouring rain so we ducked into Cervelar for lunch – luckily they were open at noon; lunch is usually 2pm here.

The food game here is on point. Excellent sandwiches and fries and really, really cold beer.

Did some shopping today – first up, Arte Y Esperanza, featuring hand-crafts of many local indigenous people. From textiles, to jewelry to housewares, this small store had a lovely array of hand made items, each with a story. With Norberto’s help, the shopkeeper shared some information about the various pieces I selected.

Further south on the way to San Telmo, I ducked into a leather shop specializing in bags. It’s far more purple than this picture suggests …

Ventured back out in the rain tonight to meet Ariel for dinner at Pin Pun, a local pizza joint that’s been serving up pies and empanadas since 1927.   Winner of “Best Pizza” as voted by the participants for Muza5K, a 5km walk along Av. Corrientes stopping and sampling at every pizza joint along the route.

Signing off from Buenos Aires tonight. Early AM trip to the airport for the 2 hour flight to Mendoza. We’ll pick up from there …. stay tuned!
