Airwaves Day 5

| 06-Nov-2016 | Finally got to bed around 3:00am so it was a late wake-up this morning. It was pouring rain so we were in no hurry to finish ham, egg & cheese breakfast toast and coffee. Today is the last day of the festival and always the lightest in the schedule. We may get out to an off-venue, we may not.  Today feels like vacation again. 🙂

Jeff and I walked over to the Nordic House to check out the pop-up vinyl market. Not much to see – maybe 5 tables total. We took the roundabout way there about because we’d both forgotten its exact location relative to the apartment. Much more direct walk back … and directly to cake.

Easily Pleepleus’s favorite stop of the trip: Cafe Babalu.  We had the chocolate cake and a warm apple crumble.

I made dinner at the apartment tonight – pasta and garlic bread – then we walked down to KEX for a DJ set by Lagaffe Tales.  Two turntables, no microphone – for reals, no MacBook in sight. 🙂  Awesome grooves that blended seamlessly from style to style and tempo to tempo.

We also had a chance to see Mrs. Lucky Records who was working the pop-up table at KEX. Always a pleasure!

That wraps up Airwaves for me; I caught a cold along the way and need some rest if I’m going to be half-human by Tuesday so I’m staying home tonight.  Fortunately I can get water hot enough for tea straight from the tap. Oh, Iceland!

Here’s our recap of Iceland Airwaves 2016:

Total shows:  Holly – 29, Jeff – 31
Best New-to-us Bands: Hórmónar, Dream Wife
Most Surprising Band: The Ills
Best shows; Dr. Spock, The Sonics

Reykjavik is certainly busier than in years past and it’s not all festival-goers; TONS of tourists.  Lots of upgrades around town, new hotels and nicer restaurants. I hope the economy holds out for them; these transformations have not been cheap.

Thanks for joining us – I hope you’ve enjoyed “traveling” along. See you next time!
