Välkommen till Stockholm!

| 28-Oct-2016 |  Greetings from Stockholm! After two shorter-than-advertised flights (SEA-KEF-ARN), we arrived mid-day in Stockholm. Successfully navigated the Arlanda Express (high-speed train)  to Stockholm center, then our first ever ride on the T-bana (metro) to Gamla Stan.  When Jeff and I previously visited Stockholm we walked everywhere but with luggage, and the possibility that we may want to cover long distances quickly this trip, it was time to give the metro a go. Always daunting after traveling, and with luggage, but the T-bana station on Gamla Stan is only a block from the hotel.
We’re staying in Gamla Stan (aka Old Town) this time – it’s centrally located, has a nice Scandic hotel and is a unique mix of cafes, restaurants, shops and very old streets.  After dumping the luggage at the hotel we took off to really ‘see’ the neighborhood. On our previous trip we crossed the island several times (we stayed immediately across the canal to the south) but didn’t really explore it. Securing takeaway lattes from a nearby cafe, we were ready to take on the cobblestone streets, narrow passageways and aimless pedestrians!

As you can see, we had some lovely weather this afternoon – only one rogue cloud that dumped hail on us for a few minutes. Temperature is in the 40s but I can hardly complain about sunshine, in Scandinavia, in late October…

We stopped by 19 Glas to say ‘hello’ to owner Peter and enjoy an afternoon glass of wine. He recommended a lovely Hungarian white that was new to us and it was delicious.  We’re planning to return on  Monday night for the Hungarian food and wine pairing menu and try some of the delicious food we see coming out of the kitchen and lighting up Facebook and Instagram feeds.

On most trips, a pizza is consumed on the first or second night. Finding the best local pie is right up there with the local burger. Tonight we enjoyed a couple of pies at Sally’s, a cozy little Italian bistro.  One was a margarita, and the other prosciutto with pine nuts and “rocket salad” (aka arugula). Rocket salad? Seriously – I had to look it up to find out what this is all about.

I leave you with some fall colors from this Nordic metropolis. Time to get some rest so we can really get after Stockholm tomorrow.
